Abstract
This study investigates how the political language and ideas of the Swedish conservative party Moderaterna has changed between 1998 and 2010. The questions forming the basis of the investigation is how the language and ideas in the welfare area has changed since 1998 and how this change can be understood. The study uses a theory and method inspired by the historian Quentin Skinner. The essence of the theory is that a change of concepts brings about a change in ideas as ideologies sets limits for what language can legitimize in a given context. The result show that a chance has taken place and points to a tendency that the individual is no longer in focus and that the concepts used have become more including. From a welfare-theoretical... The result show that a chance has taken place and points to a tendency that the individual is no longer in focus and that the concepts used have become more including. From a welfare-theoretical perspective this can be understood from a theory about how conservative parties adjust themselves to the general welfare state and decline the party line because of an institutional inertness. As Moderaterna to a greater extent has accepted the welfare state, the party is also gaining greater support from voters in the centre of the political field, which can be seen in the previous government elections.
