Abstract (Swedish)
What determines and regulates the content of the textbooks for the Swedish gymnasium (secondary school)? In the present comparative and analytic study Swedish textbooks in history and religious studies are examined. The goal is to analyze and compare the textbook approach, interpretation and usage of the terms caste and globalization, as well as the reasons for these depictions. Eric Wolf and Jonathan Friedmans world system and globalization theories are used as a theoretical frame to interpret the phenomenon.

Globalization has had a profound impact on the Indian caste based society the last 200 years. History shows that the caste system is not a static phenomenon. Swedish textbooks on the other hand tend to focus on globalization/modernization as an active process and Hindu tradition/caste as static and passive. In many textbooks caste is interpreted ahistorically as a solely religious phenomenon. The global process and modernization is quite often interpreted, in textbooks, as factors leading to social change and betterment of caste oppression. History shows the opposite. The textbooks can be viewed on as both cause and effect, within the global process, in both historical terms and within the frame of the world system theory. (Less)
