Globalization has had a profound impact on the Indian caste based society the last 200 years. History shows that the caste system is not a static phenomenon. Swedish textbooks on the other hand tend to focus on globalization/modernization as an active process and Hindu tradition/caste as static and passive. In many textbooks caste is interpreted ahistorically as a solely religious phenomenon. The global process and modernization is quite often interpreted, in textbooks, as factors leading to social change and betterment of caste oppression. History shows the opposite. The textbooks can be viewed on as both cause and effect, within the global process, in both historical terms and within the frame of the world system theory. (Less)
