Abstract
Category appellation for vulnerable groups in society seems to be afflicted more often by language change in contrast to changes in the general language. Category appellation for vulnerable groups in society seems to be afflicted more often by language change in contrast to changes in the general language. Especially this is the case with terms for persons who have mental and/or physical disabilities. This bachelor essay is about the innovations and alternations to the technical language used in human service organization, and the importance of this continued linguistic modernization.

Two public human service organizations have been subjects for this study. Documentation and publications from these organizations regarding the client group have been compared over time. The findings have been examined and analyzed both with institutional theory, containing discourses regarding legitimacy and isomorphism, in addition to ideas about knowledge and knowledge development.

The results of the study shows that the change in organizational technical language is due to national and international sociopolitical resolutions, in the form of guidelines and jurisdiction, but also to change in attitudinal trends towards the client group in general society which normatively influence upon organizations. The study also concludes that knowledge is an important part in the legitimacy of activities in human service organizations.

The need for categorization and language change is unavoidable when it comes to the bureaucratic and administrational tendencies of organizations, but it is important that we are aware of the technical language as a mean of describing social problems, not solving them. (Less)
