Abstract
The purpose of the thesis was to design an object storage solution that fitted the modern needs of an urban bicyclist. The project was focused on analyzing today’s needs and whether or not these needs were being met by the current object storage solutions. A presumption was made that present day object storage solutions had stagnated in a small number of solutions that were not necessarily fitted to today’s needs.
Firstly, various market research studies were made including the analysis of the Crescent brand and what it stands for, a study of present day object storage solutions, a market positioning analysis and research of popular and upcoming trends within the bicycle industry. This was followed up by a series of target group studies,... (More)
The purpose of the thesis was to design an object storage solution that fitted the modern needs of an urban bicyclist.
This was followed up by a series of target group studies, which included a target group analysis, field observations and a user survey. The user study gave an idea of which objects are being popularly stored on a bicycle today. It also brought many interesting comments about both the negative as well as the positive aspects today’s object storage solutions. Guidelines that were based upon these studies were put together which specified what functions the object storage solution needed and desired to become a competitive product.
The next step was to gather inspiration and visualize it by using image boards displaying colors, materials, shapes, different storage solutions and the life of the urban environment. All of this was used to directly and indirectly inspire and influence the different aspects of the design, construction and materials. A large number of ideas of object storage solutions were generated in the next phase. This phase of idea generation and concept development included brainstorming, sketching and building of mock-ups. These ideas were then evaluated in accordance with the guidelines to determine which idea would be further developed.
Thereafter the chosen concept was further designed in order to finish the concept. This final concept was developed into a new type of bicycle baskets with a mechanism, which allowed it to be folded with a single movement and easily brought along. Materials and manufacturing methods were chosen carefully. A final prototype model was built of all the needed parts and made to look as close to the product that was intended for production. (Less)
