What's the difference? Dealing with organizational design parameters in China

Jansson, Maria and Rosenberg, Anna (2008) MIO920

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how organizations should
be designed in order to work in the best possible way in China.
Method: A theoretical background has been studied. The background covered
mainly cultural studies, where a comparison between Sweden and China was
made, and also design parameters for an organization. An empirical study
took place in Shanghai, China, where managers both at Tetra Pak and some
other companies together with engineers from Tetra Pak were interviewed.
Existing theories and the results from the empirical study are combined into
recommendations for organizational design in China.

When designing an organization many factors need to be considered. In this
thesis the focus is on “softer” factors, the following design parameters;
motivation, communication, decision processes, learning and change, and
leadership is covered. The result can therefore be applied to any
organizational structure, matrix or other. However the results might be more
naturally combined with some structures than with others. This study is made
on a Swedish company, Tetra Pak, but input from other companies in the
same situation is also included. The purpose is that the study shall be possible
to apply on all Swedish companies establishing in China, and where theories
on the “Sweden – China” interface is needed. The results are presented as
recommendations for how to work with the design parameters in a Swedish
organization with Swedish-Chinese collaboration in China. The results might
also be applicable for other target groups. (Less)
