Abstract
Our purpose is to analyze the ereader as a medium and its place on todays book market. We also try to understand what possible changes e-books might lead to in the book industry. Therefor we have attempted to put the ereader into a wider historical context of the evolution of the book. To do this we provide a basic, but necessary, description of the technology used in ereaders and tablets, and to properly analyze this subject we have used Friedrich Kittler's media theories. For to place the ereader in its historical context we rely on Fredrick Kilgour and Mats Dahlström. The method used is qualitative, but as this subject is right on the cusp of the humanities and technology, we have had to use descriptive analysis as well. Our findings... (More)

Our findings are that the ereader is perceived as both a boon and a threat to reading, and draw parallels to similar shifts in other areas. We briefly touch upon the possibilities for a further evolution of reading, and the possible environmental issues. We point out that standard formats are a necessity going forward as choice otherwise might become an issue. With regards to the traditional book, we conclude that a new medium rarely completely displaces its predecessor, and that the ereader and e-books can be seen as a new tool for specific situations rather than as a complete replacement for the traditional book.
