- Fado - an essay about song and music in the fado-culture.
The word fado comes from the latin word fatum (fate in English). It does denote a specific kind of music. However – fado is a complete culture and concerns the way of living, history and the image of Portugal. This essay is focused on the musical aspects and especially the singing. Fado is seldom performed in Sweden and it´s difficult to find information in Swedish about fado singing. Therefore, a larger portion of the text is a description of this culture and how the music is transmitted in its natural context. This part of the essay is based on interviews and litterature studies. Thereafter I discuss the question how fado could be taught in Swedish schools. Drawing on research on...
