- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper was to examine how six refugees feel about their situation in Sweden. The method used was a narrative interview technique. The respondents all claimed that they are stigmatised because they are different to Swedes in cultural, religious and behavioural ways. We also examined how they use strategies to avoid stigmatisation. The study showed that all the respondents try to create situations where they do not have to show their stigma, for example by using the phone to call a government official rather than walking down to the office. One of the respondents had changed her hair color, eyebrow color and accent so that it would get less obvious that she is an immigrant. By knowing how they are affected and how they... (More)

One of the respondents had changed her hair color, eyebrow color and accent so that it would get less obvious that she is an immigrant. By knowing how they are affected and how they then react, opportunities to be able to handle the situation and partly reduce stigma will show. To engage in open communication many general ideas and images can get shattered. Accordingly, we have taken a first step for change and hope that the knowledge of, in this case, our six respondent’s experiences, will lead to that those, who deal with a stigmatised person in a negative way, will think again. Further that other readers will gain a deeper understanding of the stigma refugees handle on a daily basis. (Less)
