- Abstract
- A suicide is a tragedy not only for family and relatives of the victim but also for the railway operator’s personnel and other witnesses. The aim of this report is to reduce the rate of suicides in the railway system by means of showing that society gains from measures that reduce the risk of suicides and fatal accidents. This is possible with a risk analysis that accounts for input uncertainties and compares the cost of risk reducing measures with the benefits it generates.
The report contains a hotspot analysis which determines specific locations where higher frequency of suicide is found and relationships between these are recognized. Suicide is a complex problem which requires a broad approach and needs national efforts and research. However, the method in this report may contribute to decision support needed for implementing suicide preventive measures in the railway system; and thus be a part in resolving the complex problem of suicides.
