- Abstract
- The aim of the study was to investigate young people’s attitudes towards people with mental illness. A questionnaire “Stereotypes and facts about mental illness-what do you think about it? School survey” especially developed for adolescents were used. Seventy-three pupils at a high school with health profile at the age of 15-19 participated. The selection consisted to a larger proportion of female students and students with Swedish ethnic background. Pupils who knew someone with a mental illness had to a less extent stereotypes about people with mental illness and rated less social distance. There was a correlation between perceived stigma and social distance and between social distance and stereotypes about people with mental illness.
