Abstract
In 2008, Sweden accepted the Treaty of Lisbon, which contained a development of the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP), towards a Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). This thesis aims to study the decision making process behind the Swedish foreign policy decision to take part in CSDP, and further develop its security policy within the European Union (EU). The main purpose is therefore to explain which factors that effected the Swedish decision.

This thesis aims to study the decision making process behind the Swedish foreign policy decision to take part in CSDP, and further develop its security policy within the European Union (EU). The main purpose is therefore to explain which factors that effected the Swedish decision.
To approach this, a social constructivist aim will be taken; the traditionally Foreign Policy Analysis is completed with the Europeanization theory, with the main ambition to illuminate informal process distinctions. The study is a process tracing case study and analyzes both domestic and international conditions, by using qualitative methods.
As a conclusion, the study finds that several factors are of significance in Sweden’s decision to take part in CSDP; however, Sweden’s act in an EU Context at the international level is considered to be the factor with the greatest impact. Because of this, the study also evidence two things; first, the Swedish foreign policy has undergone strong Europeanization; and second, the Europeanization theory can be applied to open up for a more EU-oriented approach in the frontier of Foreign Policy Decision-Making.
