Interest in infrastructure development for the bicycle has grown bigger throughout the world. This study examines the health, environmental and economic effects of bicycle infrastructure investment in Båstads municipality. The aim of this study is based on my desire to evaluate multiple aspects of decision-making and also to broaden the view and understanding of our societiy. What are the external effects when a decision is taken and what values are most important in decision making?
This study shows the monetary values and the need for other measures in assessing the costs and benefits a decision entails. It does this based on economic and valuation theory. The specific questions for the study is What are the impacts on society when cycling opportunities are expanded in Båstads municipality? which in turn has been divided into three smaller questions in order to ease the practical study. These three questions being Impact on Health, environment and Economic.
Possible effects are studied from the view points of bicycle tourism and bike commuting. By using qualitative and quantitative methods, the study put values with and against each other to create an overall picture of what implications the proposed infrastructure investment has. Great emphasis has been placed on the quantitative methods, that consist of different simplified economic models and tools to get an overview of important relationships between variables.
This study finds that increased opportunities for cycling in Båstads municipality will influence people's lifestyle and encourage increased physical activity, reducing society's overall health care costs. Båstads municipality has the geographic, cultural and commercial attributes making it attractive to cycle tourism. This will in turn give new opportunities to local services by extending the usual season which will in turn benefit the local economy. Bicycle tourism is considered to have little environmental impact compared to other forms of tourism. Riding a bicycle means virtually no CO2 emissions benefiting society. This study has shown that shorter car trips replaced by a bicycle will have a significant impact on individuals daily life and also wildlife in Båstads municipality. (Less)
