Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how commuting social workers, who work in child protective services (CPS), experienced their work in a smaller urban environment. Working in CPS means that the social workers sometimes have to take drastic measurements to ensure the protection of children. This may not always go well with the rest of the family and sometimes even lead to hostility in the relationship between social worker and client. We define smaller urban environment as a city with approximately 15000-25000 inhabitants. We performed seven semi-structured interviews with professional CPS workers who work in a municipality in southern Sweden. We found that the social workers had clear incentives to separate their private life from their professional life. They argued that living and working in two separate locations was beneficial to their ability to distinguish between their private and professional identities. The social workers agreed that this particular issue is specifically linked to the size of the city where they work. Meaning that had they worked in a larger city, it wouldn’t become as much of an issue. We interpret these findings as a form of coping-strategy the social workers exercise in order to cope with the potentially strained client-worker relationships. (Less)
