Abstract
This qualitative study focus on the transfer of knowledge between the university and workplace, what the student brings from the education that is useful in the career. The gathered information consists of six depth interviews and the guidelines that social workers have to follow. We approach the area by looking into three different subjects – policies, discretion and education. To analyze the data we use two different theories which help us understand the information. We found that the policies can be seen as shared values among the social workers which help them to treat the clients the same way in the organization. We found that the policies can be seen as shared values among the social workers which help them to treat the clients the same way in the organization. The discretion these social workers have is what the organization gives them and the knowledge they have acquired in education and experience is used when there isn’t a guideline that tells what to do, mainly decisions are based on the individual client’s circumstances. The social workers agree that the education was well needed, though it was hard to say something that was good in particular. We found that the education gave personal development which greatly helped them in their work. It gave them an improved way of seeing themselves and a new position because of the transition to the new employment. (Less)
