- Abstract
- The purpose of this study has been to explore how different actors in a nursing home (i.e. Head of Unit, staff and residents) argue about elder residents’ care, autonomy and possibilities to influence and how this correlate with the increasing tendencies to view elder people as independent individuals. The study was based on eight qualitative interviews with two Heads of Unit, two staff members and four residents. To analyze the material we used scientific findings from the specific field (elder care) to find similarities and differences between our empirical data and results from other works on the subject. - The purpose of this study has been to explore how different actors in a nursing home (i.e. Head of Unit, staff and residents) argue about elder residents’ care, autonomy and possibilities to influence and how this correlate with the increasing tendencies to view elder people as independent individuals. The study was based on eight qualitative interviews with two Heads of Unit, two staff members and four residents. In this study we found that autonomy is not an obvious part of the everyday care in a nursing home. In the nursing homes we visited there were a lot of limitations to the residents’ independency and possibilities to influence their care. The Heads of Unit claimed the residents’ right to autonomy, but also expressed that there were numerous of obstacles for this self-determination such as lack of resources, the health of the elderly, the influence from family members and more. The staff members argued in a similar sense, but reasoned differently when they more explicitly spoke about the limits to influence on an organizational level. The residents were very keen to express their gratitude towards the staff in particular and for the care they received. They also showed little or no interest in influencing neither their everyday care nor the organization of the nursing home. According to the theories of Bourdieu these findings can be explained by how the expectations on every actor produce a certain behavior and certain ideas that correlate with his or her position in the nursing home. To conclude we argue that autonomy and increased possibilities to influence may not be the most important matter for elder residents in a nursing home; they seem to rather value closeness to and a good relation with the staff as something of great importance in the everyday care.
