The aim of our study was to examine the difference between how male and females, working in a home care profession, view their role. To be more specific, the gender dimension between staff members, descriptions of colleagues and their tasks.
In order to learn more about these issues, we conducted interviews with three men and three women. All, working as care givers, within the home environment. Each in different municipalities in Skåne, Sweden.
Regarding their tasks, it was understood that some were regarded as gender sensitive and uncomfortable. One task that was described as decidedly sensitive was, for male staff to help older women with personal hygiene, such as showering. This was also a dilemma as it was a part of the men’s job description, but also because the person receiving the assistance has the right of self-determination.
The analysis also showed how the interviewees ascribed differentials in characteristics between male and female staff. Men were described as more physically strong whereas women were perceived as more empathetic, but also competitive. We based our study on two main theories; those were social construction/ gender and ethics. (Less)
