Abstract
Facebook in a work related context

Little research has been conducted on Facebook and its impact on internal communication within organizations. Therefore we found it interesting to further analyze this phenomenon and contribute to this new area of theoretical research. The purpose of our study is to analyze how a closed group on Facebook functions as an internal channel for communication within an organization and how it is perceived and handled by the co-workers. We seek to analyze how the boundaries between the private- and professional sphere are handled. Facebook in a work related context

Little research has been conducted on Facebook and its impact on internal communication within organizations. Therefore we found it interesting to further analyze this phenomenon and contribute to this new area of theoretical research. The purpose of our study is to analyze how a closed group on Facebook functions as an internal channel for communication within an organization and how it is perceived and handled by the co-workers. We seek to analyze how the boundaries between the private- and professional sphere are handled. Our methodology is based on qualitative research methodology through 11 interviews with co-workers and a qualitative analysis of a closed group on Facebook. The conclusions of our thesis are that Facebook allows the opportunity for co-workers to make their voices heard within the organization. It contributes to evolve and strengthen the informal communication that contributes to a sense of belonging. However, there is an uncertainty among the co-workers regarding how they should behave on Facebook in a work related context. The co-workers are managing the boundaries between the private and professional role of each sphere in various ways. Clear boundaries help co-workers to cope with this uncertainty. (Less)

Idag finns det begränsat med teori kring forskningsämnet Facebook som intern kommunikationskanal. Syftet med vår studie är att analysera hur en sluten Facebookgrupp, som internkommunikationskanal inom en organisation, upplevs och hanteras av medarbetare, samt analysera hur gränsdragningen mellan den privata och professionella sfären hanteras. Med denna uppsats vill vi ge en fördjupad förståelse och ett teoretiskt bidrag som grund till vidare forskning.
