Abstract
This thesis is about building in Iraqi Kurdistan. I have analyzed a family house in Erbil and gave suggestions for improvement, inspired by the Swedish building techniques. Energy consumption is reduced by 78 % using the suggested improvements regarding the plan, foundation, exterior walls, floor, roof, installations and surface coatings. The differences in the construction process and building code between Sweden and Iraqi Kurdistan have been demonstrated in the work. The construction process has evolved relatively little in Iraqi Kurdistan in recent years, although many residents build houses because of the booming economy of the country. Since there are large deficiencies in the Kurdish-built houses, the government in Kurdistan started to create new laws and requirements to improve environmental, health and safety in buildings by updating old laws and add new laws and requirements. For example, an architect shall be responsible for the construction of a large project that consists of many homes and tall buildings. Thermal insulation materials were not used five years ago but they have started a bit with heat insulating materials now. There are many people in big cities in Kurdistan and the high population density has resulted in the introduction of high rise buildings. Ten years ago the outside appearance was very important, both outside and inside are important right now. There are major differences between a small project consisting of a house and a large project that consists of many housing units. For example, in a large project, there is drainage, plastic foil under the ground and a layer of concrete between the foundation and walls, whereas this is not common in single family homes. However, all buildings must have building permit before building construction begins. There are major differences between Kurdistan and Sweden in terms of construction. The aspects that lead to different building techniques in Kurdistan are:
1. High population density.
2. Warmer climate.
3. The risk of earthquakes.
4. Availability building Materials.
5. Not enough knowledge about construction techniques.
6. An unclear building code. (Less)
