Abstract
In most Swedish cities there are old industrial sites, and in the medium-sized and larger cities they are often located in central and semi-central areas. Many of these sites has been allowed to decay and are now a disturbing factor in the city environment, impose accident and safety hazards, or constitutes a risk for fires. Old industrial areas therefore represent a problem for many municipalities. One way to address these problem areas is to demolish the old industrial buildings to make way for new settlements. But many of these industrial environments are also important to preserve because they are an important part of the urban heritage. Instead of seeing the abandoned industrial areas as problems, they can also be seen as a resource for sustainable urban development. An opportunity to preserve industrial heritage is to redevelop abandoned industrial sites that could lead to re-use for other activities. But the renewal of the older industrial environments in new applications is one of the biggest challenges in urban development. The purpose of this report is to summarize what aspects need to be considered in order to preserve the old industrial areas for sustainable urban development. The methodology for this work is an extensive literature review of books, dissertations, thesis and other reports made by, for example, the City Administration and municipalities and others. Interviews supplement the literature review and provide a base for discussion of examples of completed developments of industrial sites. The result of this work show that the preservation of industrial buildings contributes to the economic, social and environmental goals of sustainable urban development. Because of these synergies is preservation of industrial buildings is an effective measure to achieve the sustainable city. Older buildings and environments contribute to both, the identity of the area, but also to the people who live in the city. Old industrial sites can and should be considered as cultural heritage for social as well historical reasons. By following the guidelines summarised in this thesis work old industrial sites can be integrated in the rest of the city without demolishing the historically valuable buildings and structures completely.
