Abstract
Focusing on the norm: A study of social workers’ attitudes towards norms and a norm-critical approach. [translated title]

Norms are constantly present in our society and affects us all by narrowing our view of each other and limiting people’s possibilities. Norms concerning social categories such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity and disabilities divide people into different categories based on preconceived ideas. In the end, this division could lead to oppression. The aim of this study was to explore social workers’ attitudes towards norms and a norm-critical approach. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with seven social workers working with youth in different areas of social work. Three of our interviewees worked as... (More)

Three of our interviewees worked as counselors at two different youth clinics (Ungdomsmottagningen), where they have an integrated norm-critical approach in their practices. Two interviewees worked as school counselors at two different upper secondary schools. The final two social workers work with youth in the social services. After conducting the interviews we divided our material into three themes: treatment, awareness and a norm-critical approach. For our analysis we used power, critical theory and intersectionality to illuminate our data. Our study showed that the social workers who were interviewed want to create openness in the meeting with clients and strive towards seeing the individual behind the stereotypes. The interviewees emphasized the importance of being aware of their own and society’s norms and preconceptions. It is impossible to erase the constant affect of norms, and awareness is therefore a sound option. Regarding introducing a norm-critical approach to social work, our interviewees were affirmative of the idea even though they could also distinguish difficulties with its implementation. (Less)
