Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how a budget-led practice affects middle managers with budget responsibility in the Swedish public social services to do their jobs. Based on five interviews, using middle managers in five different social fields, the main results show that the financial aspect in the public social services becomes an issue in the middle mangers work-tasks. Three main tasks were identified consisting issues related to staff, budget and operational development. But the economic situation is showing that it’s not possible to handle the high pressure of social cases and at the same time develop the organization as the managers would like.
