- Abstract (Swedish)
- When designing concrete structures, there are great demands made on quality and service life of the construction, and for this the size of concrete cover is crucial. The concrete cover protects the reinforcement bars from carburization and from infiltration of chlorides, which make them corrode. When using today’s codes while designing, a thick concrete cover will yield a large crack width, which often is larger than accepted. The crack width which the codes refer to is the crack width on the concrete surface. A question which should be asked is whether the crack width at the concrete surface really is crucial for the corrosion in the reinforcement. The crack width at the reinforcement bar is probably more important since it is here the... (More)

The crack width which the codes refer to is the crack width on the concrete surface. A question which should be asked is whether the crack width at the concrete surface really is crucial for the corrosion in the reinforcement. The crack width at the reinforcement bar is probably more important since it is here the corrosion reaction takes place.
This Master Thesis aims to get knowledge of how the crack varies in the zone closest to the reinforcement bar in a beam loaded with a bending moment. How the crack width at different distances from the reinforcement bar is affected by the thickness of the concrete cover will also be investigated. (Less)
