- Abstract
- The social significance of destiny in old Icelandic sagas and eddas from the thirteenth century is examined in this paper. I ask the question how destiny is explained and in what shape it is described, what it means to the characters in the sagas and how they handle the predictions of their future. The role of the gods and the creatures such as nornor and valkyrior is a central part in trying to understand human actions concerning destiny. In Old Norse belief it was commonly known that the past, present and future were supervised by the three nornor Urd, Verdandi and Skuld.

In Old Norse belief it was commonly known that the past, present and future were supervised by the three nornor Urd, Verdandi and Skuld.
In this paper I also examine the role of religion in the sagas, the controversy that exists in the material due to its origination in a Christian society but with stories that has it’s roots in the Viking age. Therefor the part of memory and traditions become very important. I interpret my material in a way of a postmodern approach and have analytical frame of cultural memory as my procedure.
My selection in using an unconventional historical material and selecting only a few tales of the wide selection of Icelandic sagas narrows my study but brings forth a selective idea of the concept. The common denominator when dealing with future and predictions is death, but what is interesting for me is how a main character acts in this foretelling. If they decide to act against it or if this realm accepted that you couldn’t change the future, it is already determined. (Less)
