Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to investigate why the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) still consist of so few women. This is done by analysing the Armed Forces’ documents regarding equality. The hypothesis is that there are discourses concerning gender and women in the organization which reproduce stereotypical dichotomies of men and women. By using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis I have discovered three discourses. The first examines how some words and concepts are included in the documents while others are not, creating consensus rather than conflict. The second discourse investigates the way women are seen as a complementary resource and the third concerns the women abroad, where the Swedish female soldiers are seen as a tool... (More)

The second discourse investigates the way women are seen as a complementary resource and the third concerns the women abroad, where the Swedish female soldiers are seen as a tool of gaining equality in the conflict areas. The result I have reached is that women in the Armed Forces are constructed as different from men and that men constitute the norm. The work that has been put into equality has – instead of questioning the organisational structure and culture – adapted around it, leading women to still being excluded. I suggest that further actions need to be taken in order to break the tight linkage between masculinity and militarism, possibly by adopting gender quotas. (Less)
