- This master’s thesis describes methods of calculating deformations of large astronomical telescope mirrors caused by the mirror support system. In the first part of the report these calculation methods are derived, along with methods of optimizing a support system pattern. Both analytical and numerical methods are described in the case of deformation analysis, and methods based on probabilistic methods along with a parametrical description of the support system pattern in the case of optimization of the pattern.

In the second part of this report the deformation models and optimization
methods are used when trying to optimize the support system pattern for
a 50 m monolitic mirror. A future telescope with a main mirror of this size could be a reality, and has been proposed by a number of astronomers around the world.
The analyzes show that it is theoretically possible to support a mirror of this size, and that the number of supports needed increases when using a thinner mirror. (Less)
