Abstract
The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine how the Swedish model for production and distribution of talking books to the print disabled can be designed in the future, on the basis of the self-expressed needs of the users. Three questions were formulated in order to achieve this aim:

1. What needs do the users, according to themselves, have in relation to talking books to achieve equal means of reading compared to other people?

2. Which of these needs are satisfied by today’s talking book services? Which needs are not satisfied?

3. Which parts of the talking book services needs to change to satisfy the users’ selfexpressed needs, and how do these parts need to change?

Five users of talking books were interviewed about their... (More)
The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine how the Swedish model for production and distribution of talking books to the print disabled can be designed in the future, on the basis of the self-expressed needs of the users.

Five users of talking books were interviewed about their experiences of and needs related to library services concerning talking books. The results were analyzed using empowerment theory as a theoretical framework.

The findings were that common needs were access to technical aids, being able to use talking books in the same ways as printed books are used, a large range of book titles, easy ways to access talking books directly, service adapted to ones own personal needs according to type of disability and other factors, competent library staff that provides high quality service in the library and over physical distances, being able to use the library services by oneself and information and knowledge about technical issues, legal/rules issues, and what services are available concerning talking books. In addition to these general needs, the users also expressed several different needs of a more individual kind.

None of these needs are completely satisfied by the talking book services today, and so improvements are suggested in all of these areas. Further research is needed to be able to make a proper prioritization of in what order the different areas should be improved. (Less)
