Abstract
This thesis deals with the subject of economic optimization of energy production. An initial theoretical part present the various input data required for an optimization. The most basic inputs are the forecasts of district heating load, forecast of electricity price and cost functions.

Some different optimization methods used for economic optimization of energy is described. An example of how to solve an optimization problem of type "Mixed integer programming" by the “Branch-and-bound” method is found in Appendix 2.

A description of an existing energy system, which is a part of a later analysis, has been made. This energy system consists of a power plant, waste boilers, oil fired hot water boilers and a heat pump system.

A description of an existing energy system, which is a part of a later analysis, has been made. This energy system consists of a power plant, waste boilers, oil fired hot water boilers and a heat pump system.
A summary of a software currently used by many energy-producing companies have been made. The software is used to generate economically optimal production plans, especially for district heating- and electricity production. The same software has been used to implement two economic analyzes in this thesis.
The first analysis shows the potential savings opportunity during analyzed period. The cost of production during this period has been compared with optimal cost over the same period.
The second analysis aims to demonstrate the savings achieved by the introduction of a software program for economic optimization.
The results of the analysis indicate that there are significant saving opportunities for the production of electricity and heat, through the introduction of a software for economic optimization. (Less)
