- Abstract
- In this thesis, I have attempted to understand how young people are using social media tools to increase capabilities. The primary fieldwork was carried out in Harare, Zimbabwe. A qualitative study was completed, employing Sen's (1999) Capability Approach, adapted by various authors to account for the role of information and communication technologies. After presenting empirical analysis, the thesis concludes that the unique characteristics of social media as an ICT tool have helped increase capabilities for young people primarily through increased availability of information that is useful and relevant to the lives of young people, thus increasing the opportunity for people to make informed choices in critical lifestyle areas.
