- Abstract
- My essay is about the Danish Radio Concert House, a building for the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen.
The architect Jean Nouvel started the project in 1992, and the building was finished in 2009. When Nouvel started to plan the Concert House, the area around the building location consisted of nature and wasteland. Usually Nouvel uses genius loci, the special history and context of the area in which the new building is planned. With this project, Nouvel had to think in another way. He framed the building as a cathedral, similar to older architectural tradition. In medieval towns the church often was situated in the city centre, then the architecture was planned after the church.
I have used the theories of the architecture theorist Christian Norberg-Schulz and the philosophers that he himself has used, mainly phenomenological theories. My methods have been literature studies as well as field studies, visiting the Concert House in Ørestad. Studying and photographing both the outside and inside has resulted in an analysis from my own point of view.
The essay is also about the location of the building, why it was placed on the outskirts of Copenhagen, and not in the city centre. I think that one reason can be that the Concert House is located between Copenhagen and Malmö, in the middle of Öresundsregionen, a place where a lot of things are happening now (2013) and the next years.
