- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to illustrate and examine how social workers professional identity shapes and maintains when they work in an arena where social work is not in focus. We used a qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using an interview guide. We interviewed nine professional social workers who works in three different field - probation, hospital and school. Profession titles that the social workers had was probation officer, school welfare counselor and hospital counselor. In order to analyze the phenomenon and answer our research questions, we used two theories - professional identity and professionalization process.

It turned out that professionalization leads to a stronger professional identity. A number of factors were distinguished - education, work experience, supervision and specialization. In the result it turned out that these factors had impact on the shape and maintenance of social workers professional identity. As a social worker you can be in an arena where other professions is the dominant profession and therefore turf battles can sometimes occur. Fighting for your professional capacity and develop your own niche in various workplaces is yet another factor that affects how to shape and maintain professional identity. (Less)
