Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how small and medium enterprises understand the concept of CSR as well as the motives and barriers SMEs experience concerning the development of a successful CSR policy.
Methodology: The study has been performed using a qualitative approach to the concept of CSR. Empirical data was gathered from interviews with one or two persons from three different companies; CeDe Group, Lahega and Exakta Printing.
Theoretical perspectives: Literature covering different areas of CSR as well as what characterize SMEs and CSR in SMEs, constitutes the theoretical foundation of this thesis.
Empirical foundation: CeDe Group, Lahega and Exakta Printing has been studied. In what way the companies work with CSR, was described, as well as how they perceive CSR and what motives and barriers they experience concerning CSR. Furthermore, secondary data was also gathered using company web sites, annual reports and other publications.
Conclusions: The study argues that (1) CSR is a well known concept for SMEs and that there exists a widespread understanding of the importance of a strategic approach to CSR, even though (2) results indicate that SMEs represents knowledge and ideas greater than what corporate activities show, where much concerns that it is the right thing to do. Furthermore, (3) the motives to CSR often originate from corporate culture and personal values from leading individuals, which together with requirements from important costumers seems to be the most common motives to CSR in SMEs, while the most distinctive barrier (4) concerns the lack of knowledge and understanding of CSR among employees which also influence other barriers such as time, communication and the ability to see the long term advantages of CSR.
