Abstract
Entrepreneurs have difficulties in performing maintenance activities due to the increasing intensity of train services and failing infrastructure. Annually, the state loses billions of SEK due to delays caused by failures in infrastructure or maintenance not performed on time. The largest amounts of delays occur during winter time, when our infrastructure cannot cope with the climate as it is exposed to.
In this paper I, with the help of interviews, field studies and literature; aim to find the biggest problem areas for the entrepreneurial company Strukton Rail AB. Then, to then suggest various solutions that can be done within the organization, the machines they use and the infrastructure.

Entrepreneurs have difficulties in performing maintenance activities due to the increasing intensity of train services and failing infrastructure. Annually, the state loses billions of SEK due to delays caused by failures in infrastructure or maintenance not performed on time. The largest amounts of delays occur during winter time, when our infrastructure cannot cope with the climate as it is exposed to.
In this paper I, with the help of interviews, field studies and literature; aim to find the biggest problem areas for the entrepreneurial company Strukton Rail AB. Then, to then suggest various solutions that can be done within the organization, the machines they use and the infrastructure.
Many problems and deficiencies arise because the contractors do not get access to the track they need and get down prioritized. In addition, the Swedish Transport Administration requirements for contractors are set very high and a lot of work is performed unnecessarily when in reality there is no time for it.
Development of snow removal vehicles in the last thirty to forty years has had a slow development. New snow removal vehicles are not more efficient than previous ones. Although the machinery used today is considered by many to be inadequate Strukton believes that they have the equipment necessary to perform the jobs. The deficiency lies instead in that they do not get enough time slots to perform the job as well as in infrastructure access.
The Swedish Transport Administration states that the railroad will not get by through technical solutions within the infrastructure alone, and it will always require a direct snow removal effort. While the railway leading countries such as Japan runs their trains independently of weather conditions just using world leading infrastructure and technical solutions. Infrastructure is the part where I believe the financial investment can provide the greatest impact. Unfortunately, we cannot use the same solutions as those used in Japan and China because then we would have had to rebuild our entire rail network. However, many ideas can be copied and there are other similar solutions that can be implemented into traditional track to reduce the direct snow removal and reduce operating costs. (Less)
