Abstract
There is a considerable amount of research and literature about success factors of academic spin-offs in general. Some sources describe academic spin-offs in Sweden, which is one of the most innovative societies in the world. More specific sources address certain issues such as academic spin-off creation, finance, performance or other factors influencing spin-off success in regions as Gothenburg, Jönköping, Linköping, Blekinge, Stockholm and Lund. However, to our knowledge no source is exploring a broader integral set of success factors of academic spin-offs at Lund University in particular. This second oldest Swedish university is unique in many respects, not only due to an excellent Linnaeus research environment supported by the Swedish Research Council with 900M SEK. This makes Lund University the university with by far the most cross-disciplinary research centers of Swedish universities. Therefore, we want to examine how researchers have managed to succeed with their academic spin-offs based in Lund. In this study, we chose a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with successful founders. The outcome of this paper is that “concept”, “team”, “experience”, “financing”, “external expertise” and “passion” are the six most important factors for academic spin-off success in Lund. Moreover, it has been revealed that there is a particular stress on “access to resources”, “employ lacked expertise”, “networks”, utilizing “business angels” instead of venture capitalists, “fun” and “media attention”.
