Abstract
During the summer of 2013, A-hus will deliver housing in four floors to Derome Mark & Bostad exploiting land in Svedala. One of the technical challenges in these houses is to design the connection between the two outer wall elements and the floor structure. The current proposal is to connect the three elements using a 400 mm long screw that is toe-screwed through all three elements. This method implies a high degree of prefabrication and a quick and easy installation. During the summer of 2013, A-hus will deliver housing in four floors to Derome Mark & Bostad exploiting land in Svedala. One of the technical challenges in these houses is to design the connection between the two outer wall elements and the floor structure. The current proposal is to connect the three elements using a 400 mm long screw that is toe-screwed through all three elements. This method implies a high degree of prefabrication and a quick and easy installation. The aim of this work is to investigate whether the proposed joint design can fulfil the strength and deformation requirements imposed. The work is limited to investigating only tensile and shear forces between the wall elements. Effect of actions is calculated in the ultimate and serviceability limit states. Loads in the form of self-weight, wind actions and misalignment load will act on the investigated connection. A-hus calculations of effects of actions that are acting on the connection are also presented. Also, the requirements with respect to accidental actions for a building with load-bearing timber frame are investigated. Tests of the connection resistance in tensile and shear loading are carried out. Calculations for the screw’s lateral load capacity and withdrawal capacity are carried out. The results from the tests show that tensile failure between the wall elements does not occur in the screw as expected in the calculations, but by failure in the wood due to tension perpendicular to the grain. This means that the connection does not meet the requirements in terms of traction between the wall elements and there is a high risk of severe deformation and failure. At both tensile and shear force, deformations become large even at small loads. These results mean that the connection does not meet the requirements in terms of tension between the wall elements and a high risk of extensive deformation and failure exists. The results of this work has led to that the engineers at A-hus revised the connection. (Less)
