Abstract
The importance of technology as a source of competitive
advantage has made the technological development an
important part of the strategic management of a company.
Since investment in technological development can be
expensive and can involve a high risk it is essential to
integrate the company’s technologies with its general
commercial strategy. To be able to do that it is important to
have an understanding for your technological perquisites and
competencies and how they are supposed to contribute to
the overall business strategy.

The importance of technology as a source of competitive
advantage has made the technological development an
important part of the strategic management of a company.
Since investment in technological development can be
expensive and can involve a high risk it is essential to
integrate the company’s technologies with its general
commercial strategy. To be able to do that it is important to
have an understanding for your technological perquisites and
competencies and how they are supposed to contribute to
the overall business strategy.
Bioteria Technologies AB is a small technology and
innovation driven company with its core value in the
biotechnological solutions it offers. Historically the company
has lacked a plan for the types of technology that are
necessary for the company to be able to reach its commercial
and financial goals. Due to the fact that Bioteria at the
moment is in a phase of expansion, both organizationally
and in terms of products, a technology strategy is requested
as a part of the development of a long-term business plan.
Purpose:
The purpose of the study is to describe and analyze the
company’s technological resources and management of
technology as well as to give recommendations to the
development of a future technology strategy.
Methodology:
The study was conducted as a combination of an
exploratory, a descriptive and an explanatory case study with
a flexible methodology in order to state a problem and meet
the purpose of both describe and analyze the company
technological operation. Information was gathered through
the use of qualitative methods such as interviews and
observations as well as through analysis of secondary data
such as literature studies and archival analysis.
Conclusions:
Based on the need for a detailed analysis as the foundation
for the development of a technology strategy an
operationalized expansion of technology audit proved to be a
useful tool for assessing a company's technological
achievement. Based on the conducted audit it has become
clear that the absence of a strategic approach concerning
technological matters in the studied company have led to
inefficiencies in management, acquisition as well as
exploitation of the company's technologies with high
potential of enhancement. (Less)
