Abstract
The renovation of the million project housing is today an important issue and many people are dependent on that it is done well. This essay explores the connection between urban renewal and gentrification with a single case method. The case is Gårdsten, which is an area in the north of Gothenburg that has gone through a series of renovations. The purpose of this essay is to have critical view of the project, by looking at it through experience of earlier renovations of low status areas. Four indicators of gentrification are developed: higher living costs, displacement, conflicts and residential segregation. The reasons for this is that the living costs have not increased, the tenants have had a big influence on the process and that the area still do not attract people from the center of Gothenburg. Though, some displacement can be noticed and rules and attitudes from the housing company create an exclusionary environment where some are more wanted than others. (Less)
