- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to distinguish the different varibles that together forms the concept of cult. The focus lies on Uppåkra, both what has been found there, how this is interpretated, how Uppåkra as a place functioned and how this is understood by researchers and writers

within the archaeological field. Books that have been in the spotlight of the discussions about Uppåkra are mainly the books in the so called “Uppåkra studies” that in detail describe and study the subjects that my essay concerns.
My goal is to, while performing a literature study by using as many sources of information surrounding this subject as possible, discover what it is that makes the researchers and writers consider an artefact or place as cult and look for the discussions sourrounding this. The idea about cult needs to be questioned in order to be used in an appropriate and meaningful way. After my research about which artefacts and places that often indicate cult I can see that my results shows that cult is connected to the actions executed by men and women in the
past that they themselves frequently took part in, using certain instruments, in certain places and with certain rules. Some artefacts are considered to indicate cult more than others often
due to the fact that these have been rare, imported from exotic places and perhaps mainly because they have been interpretated as this before. (Less)
