Abstract
A characteristic feature of the contemporary politics in Europe is the presence of anti-immigrant parties in the parliament of several countries. In this field of research, plenty explanations for the success of these parties have been presented. As theoretical background earlier conducted studies of Pippa Norris et al. has been used which emphasizes that corruption and dissatisfaction with the performance of the state are factors which drive protest voting. In this field of research, plenty explanations for the success of these parties have been presented. This thesis focuses on the role of trust in political institutions as an explanation, with the assumption that low trust leads to protest voting. As theoretical background earlier conducted studies of Pippa Norris et al. has been used which emphasizes that corruption and dissatisfaction with the performance of the state are factors which drive protest voting. To examine whether there is a negative correlation between trust in political institutions and support for anti-immigrant parties, the election results in 28 European countries have been compared to the rates of trust. The data being used are brought from the Eurobarometer Surveys, Eurostat and Manifesto Database.
The study did not result in any strongly statistic correlations, but it can be concluded that countries with a high rate of trust in institutions tend to be the countries with the highest election support for anti-immigrant parties. The reason for this might be that many of these parties have integrated themselves into the democratic system and are therefore not considered as protest parties anymore. (Less)
