Abstract
The aim of this study has been to critically analyze the political debate surrounding undocumented migrant’s legal rights to healthcare in Sweden. On the 1 of July 2013 undocumented migrants were granted the same legal rights to healthcare as asylum seekers. Using the methods of linguistics professor Norman Fairclough I analyzed two of the major debates on this subject that’s taken place in parliament. Through my analysis I shed light upon how the political discourses surrounding the subject has changed within parliament in later years. I also clarify how arguments that seek to justify not giving healthcare to undocumented migrants are formed in discursive manners. The most evident results found have been a change in the way government politicians perceive undocumented migrants and the justification of not giving healthcare to this group on the basis that they’re illegal.
