Abstract
Sweden is striving to fulfill Vision Zero, a road traffic safety project that aims to prevent people from getting killed or seriously injured in traffic. To further improve safety and accessibility of the existing roads, widening of roads can be performed. The purpose of this thesis is to identify and summarize different variants of construction for road widening, using the existing data and experiences regarding widening. In order to obtain the necessary information a literature survey, two field studies and 12 interviews, with relevant project managers, were performed. To further improve safety and accessibility of the existing roads, widening of roads can be performed. The purpose of this thesis is to identify and summarize different variants of construction for road widening, using the existing data and experiences regarding widening. In order to obtain the necessary information a literature survey, two field studies and 12 interviews, with relevant project managers, were performed. The same type of questionnaire was used during all the interviews. This questionnaire contained questions answering in what phase of the construction process the road is in, which technical solution was applied and which studies were made etc. Two interviews with experienced geotechnical engineers were also performed to gain more knowledge within the topic. This thesis includes three different technical solutions. These three are widening with natural material including milling and admixing, stabilization and expansion of reinforcement. It also contains information concerning the important factors that should be considered during widening. The technical solutions, which the report refers to, are summarized in a chart. This presents the pros and cons of each technical solution. A compilation of the technical solutions showed that there are two methods to prefer. These two are widening with reinforcement and admixing. The thesis states the importance of proper pre-investigations and that thorough checks are made throughout the construction phase of a project.
