The purpose of this thesis has been to explore how school counselors work with and relate to sexuality in their work with youths. The purpose of this thesis has been to explore how school counselors work with and relate to sexuality in their work with youths. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four school counselors. This study has focused on social factors of sexuality. The main results that the study presents are that sexuality is highlighted to be a natural subject matter, but sometimes with a low priority. It is also emphasized that sexuality seems to be a topic that school counselors and students approach with caution. The results further presents that sexuality is a topic that is about much more than sex. Experiences have been highlighted where students have been concerned about questions of identity, normality and expectations related to sexuality. The conclusions reached in this thesis are that it varies how sexuality is included in the school counselors’ everyday work. One explanation to this is seen in an inadequate knowledge base. Further, caution of talking about sexuality is explained on the basis that sexuality usually is a private subject. But the theoretical foundations of Michel Foucault and Anthony Giddens, give hope that the role of sexuality in social work may change and that the ability to provide good support to youth on issues of sexuality increase.
