- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to study the factors which affect the decisions made by social workers who deal with financial assistance, as well as examine how the social workers perceive the discretion that the Social Services Act allows and how they think the discretion affects their work and their decisions. Since the purpose was to explore the experience of social workers, we have used a qualitative method. Our empirical material is made up of seven semi-structured interviews. - The purpose of this study was to study the factors which affect the decisions made by social workers who deal with financial assistance, as well as examine how the social workers perceive the discretion that the Social Services Act allows and how they think the discretion affects their work and their decisions. We came to the conclusion that the client’s needs and personal responsibility, the guidelines of the organization, as well as the time there is to spend on cases are some of the leading factors when it comes to the making of decisions. As to how social workers perceive the discretion, colleagues play an important role when it comes to interpreting it. Social workers think the discretion is crucial to their work. Through the discretion they manage the needs of the individual. It also turned out that the discretion can leave room for arbitrariness. (Less)
