Empirical foundation: The empirical data is based on semi-structured interviews with two Swedish retail chains. A smaller proportion of secondary data, consisting of the annual reports of the companies, have been used.

Conclusions: The study has resulted in the conclusion that there are differences in the control of the retail chain’s different operating functions. Company-owned stores are characterized by action control while the franchise units in some areas are completely unregulated by management. A similarity in how management control the chain’s brand can be distinguished. Verification that the concept is maintained is upheld by action control of all stores to prevent compromising the chain’s uniformity. Reduced uniformity can affect the brand negatively, which is not consistent with organizational goals. (Less)
