- Water quality in the Säbybrook
The Säbybrook is a small stream in Landskrona municipality, situated in a landscape dominated by agricultural practices. The stream serves as a spawning ground for sea trout and nature conservation aspects has hence grown in importance over the years. Improvements of the environment in the Säbybrook has thus become a matter of interest for Landskrona municipality, where water quality parameters such as nutrient surplus and turbidity is of primary concern. Improvements of the environment in the Säbybrook has thus become a matter of interest for Landskrona municipality, where water quality parameters such as nutrient surplus and turbidity is of primary concern. The nutrient availability in the water is high, according to previous studies. Some erosion is also visible around the stream, which could indicate high levels of turbidity in the brook. The only previous survey of water quality in the Säbybrook was done in 1992-1993 and the recent development is hence unknown. The magnitude of the sediment input from erosion is also not fully investigated. The aim with the Säbybrook project is hence to investigate the current water quality and examine if there been any visible changes in water quality over the past 20 years
The measurements from the samples collected during the spring of 2013 showed turbidity values which were close to the national average. The highest measured values did in fact not exceed moderate turbidity levels. The area surrounding the stream did nevertheless show clear signs of erosion. The stream seems to be a likely recipient of the eroded soil material, but the soil particles appears to be too coarse to cause high turbidity levels during normal flow rates. It is possible that higher flow rates would bring an increase in turbidity.
The measurements, conducted during the spring of 2013, showed nitrogen levels far above the recommended value. The nitrogen levels in Säbybäcken were between 2700-8000 µl/l, which according to the Swedish environmental protection agency guide lines is very high-extremely high values. The measured nitrogen concentrations were higher during 1992-1993 compared with the spring of 2013, but a decrease of nitrogen leakage could not be concluded since the spring sampling consisted of too few values.
The measured nitrogen concentration indicates however that nitrogen could constitute a water quality issue. Eutrophication tends to cause waters to become overgrown. This could in turn have a negative impact on the sea trout’s ability to spawn in the brook, as they may lose accessibility to their spawning grounds in dense vegetation. Actions to restrict nutrient availability in the brook could hence be of interest, if one wishes to promote sea trout spawning in the Säbybrook. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
(More) - Säbybäckens vattenkvalitet

(Less)
