- This thesis examines how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be used as a tool to influence democratization and democratic norms. In a globalized world where companies nowadays can differentiate their production and sale by outsourcing their production in a country where labor is cheaper, followed by higher demands on the transnational companies set by the surroundings, however, resulted in a gained importance to CSR. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how transnational companies work with CSR and how it can affect the processes of democratization or standards of democracy. To understand this, I used a pre-constructed theoretical framework where aspects such as increased education, freedom of association, and increased living standards where included. These aspects were then examined based on my selected preference, the Swedish clothing company H&M. Based on the theoretical framework and the different aspects, it is difficult to draw any general conclusions from the research made. One can at least say that the transnational companies, who actively working using CSR, may possess a contributing factor to democratization or advocate democratic standards. But it would be naive to say that transnational companies by ourselves will be able to create democracy. (Less)
