Abstract
The European Union has decided to standardize the train control command system on the European railways. The reason for the standardization of the train control command system is to increase the competitiveness of the railway by promoting the ability to run the same train from one end of Europe to the other, without the need to change locomotives and drivers. The train control command system that was chosen by the European Union is ERTMS which stands for European Rail Traffic Management System. Initially, the ERTMS will be introduced on eleven (11) corridors that stretch throughout Europe. Sweden is involved in the corridor known as the Corridor B, which runs between Stockholm and Naples. The portion of Corridor B located in Sweden will be completed by 2020. Sweden has chosen to replace the existing ATC-system with ERTMS on all railways throughout Sweden. The study is an opinion-based qualitative study of the Swedish railway industry's views on the European train control command system ERTMS. To set ERTMS in proportion the positive and negative aspects of ERTMS was compared with the existing system ATC. The study is focused on the key factors: Finance, Information, Technology and Industry expertise. The substrate was collected through qualitative interviews of railway operators from the following categories: Infrastructure manager, Suppliers and Construction planners. The selection of interviewees was made using chain sampling. The interviews were analyzed and processed with the analytical sense concentrator. The result is presented under the respective key factor with an added factor for other opinions. This is illustrated by a chart with the positive and negative aspects that emerged from the interview responses. Under each chart is an analyzing text that describes the industry's mutual opinion. The railway industry is cautious towards ERTMS. For the motivation towards ERTMS to properly appear, it will require a general increase of knowledge about ERTMS, in the entire industry. (Less)
