Abstract
The present study had three main objectives. The first was to examine the experience of being the partner of a person with a gambling disorder. The second and third objectives sought to examine the perception of need for, and the experience of receiving, support in ones’ situation as a partner. In this qualitative study eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with female partners of male gambling addicts. The participants had all received support in their situation. To analyze the data a thematic analysis was performed, which generated 17 main themes. The findings showed that the participants experienced negative effects on their wellbeing as caused by their partners’ gambling addiction. They also experienced a need for support in... (More)

It was found that the participants tended to pay attention to their partners’ need for support rather than their own. Furthermore, when receiving support, the participants’ possibilities to assimilate received support were complicated as participants adjusted what they expressed in consideration of their partner. The participants’ specific needs for support, and their positive and negative experiences when receiving support, were discussed in this study. Knowledge about gambling disorder, and to be met with an understanding and non-evaluative approach when receiving support, were examples of positive experiences. To be given advice not compatible with the specific support needs, and to be met with a lack of serious concern for ones’ situation were examples of negative experiences. (Less)

Denna studie hade tre syften. (Less)
