With a poststructuralist approach the thesis draws on Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory. The feminist concept of intersectionality is used to examine how interacting power relations interplay in the meaning constructing processes which generates inequality. The combination of discourse theory and the intersectionality perspective creates an intertwined theoretical framework.
The analysis shows that the discourse of the individual's responsibility for the unemployment and the transformation towards employability, dominates the examined material. Articulations of superiority and inferiority construct subject positions as ”employable” or ”unemployable”. It shows that meaning of desirable behaviour is created through gendered, racialized and classed subject positions and through the concept of respectability as well as the notion of able-bodiedness. The dominating discourses and it's fixation of meaning creates demands for ”improvement” and discipline. It also creates restricted subject positions, reproduces hegemonic definitions of ”work” and phrases the concept of youth unemployment as an individual problem. (Less)
