- My interest for the topic discussed in the thesis originates from my experiences and previous fears for Landskrona as a city, a place that I nowadays live in and have no intention of leaving.
The aim of the research presented in the thesis was to investigate whether or not safety and security walks is an efficient instrument for increasing the feeling of safety among the population and for reducing the level of crime. The investigation was carried out by means of a narrative literature review, focusing on the topic in question, as well as a qualitative questionnaire survey, in which the respondents have participated in safety and security walks. The aim of the research presented in the thesis was to investigate whether or not safety and security walks is an efficient instrument for increasing the feeling of safety among the population and for reducing the level of crime. The investigation was carried out by means of a narrative literature review, focusing on the topic in question, as well as a qualitative questionnaire survey, in which the respondents have participated in safety and security walks. The main outcome of the research is that the walks form a good instrument for increasing the safety among the population and for reducing the level of crime, as well as for achieving a higher level of closeness between individuals in the population. It is, however, an instrument that requires thorough planning and that all participants are treated equally, before, during, and after the walks, no matter if they participate due to their profession or because they live or work in the area in question. Moreover, it is important to ensure that the number of participants from the public is large, in order for the walks to reach their full potential. Also, it has to be considered that the walks constitute only a part of the crime preventing work in a society, and that other measures should be carried out in parallel. (Less)
