- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the anti-EU party the Swedish demo-crats own political medium SD-Kuriren and its articles regarding the European Parliament elections of 2014. The study aims to analyse how the use of language in SD-Kurirens articles forms the basis for how nationalist and populist discourses are shaped and expressed. The theoretical framework applied in this thesis is Benedict Anderson's theories about "the imagined community" and John C Breuillys theories of nationalism as a political claim to power together with Jens Rydgrens theories of radical right-wing pop-ulism. The method chosen to answer how nationalist and populist discourses are ex-pressed in SD-Kuriren is Norman Fairclough’s Critical... (More)

The method chosen to answer how nationalist and populist discourses are ex-pressed in SD-Kuriren is Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, a method which examines the relationship between text, discourse practice in which text is pro-duced and consumed within and the social practice.
The study reveals how nationalist and populist discourses in SD-Kuriren mainly express itself through an imagined perception of the "ordinary and reasonable people". The lin-guistic representation of the people permeates the entire EU-criticism in SD-Kuriren and forms the basis for how nationalist discourse primarily expresses itself as a nationalist and political claim to power.
